While Yemen grapples with internal conflicts, Socotra has been completely isolated from any distress related to those conflicts and remains an oasis of tranquility.

Socotra has enjoyed relative autonomy from mainland Yemen for many years. The island has its own cultural dialect, a small population, and its own Governor responsible for its people. When you’re on the island, it’s hard to imagine any conflict happening across it.

Guarded by a coalition of Saudi Arabian and UAE forces secure the Archipelago through what is known as the Southern Transitional Council. This allows the island to operate undisturbed by mainland turmoil. The presence of these military outfits has mostly been invisible to the public as daily life continues undisturbed.

Like the rest of the nation, high price inflation is an issue, and commercial transportation of both goods and services has been curtailed. Small shopping boats continue to ferry back and forth between the island and mainland, but most larger vessels have all but ceased operations since 2015.

But, despite economic challenges, Socotra welcomes tourists with open arms.

But, is it safe?

Yes, absolutely yes. However, as a tourist visiting a new land, you always need to be mindful of your own personal safety with regards to whatever activity you may be engaging in. Mind your surroundings, stay hydrated, watch out for jellyfish or sharp rocks, but most of all, listen to your guide. That person is there to ensure you’re safe while enjoying yourselves.
